Summary

We are the Water Protectors is a book about a cry for help to safeguard Earth's most precious attribute, water. The story is written in point of view of a little girl who learned the importance of water in the Anishinaabe tribe. "Water is the first medicine, Nokomis told me" (Linstrom, 2020). The "black snake" is introduced in the story as the destroyer of water and would cause the Earth to die. The "black snake" is referred to oil pipelines. The little girl organizes her community to rally and fight for Earth's water. The book is beautifully illustrated by Michaela Goade.

Evaluation

This book was very influential and I would love to use it in my future classroom. It brings awareness to other cultures and the problems they face that may not occur where we live. The people in the Anishinaabe tribe had the power to stand up and fight for what they wanted. I think it's a great book to teach your students to stand up for what they believe in and to give it their all. At the back of the book is the Earth Steward and Water Protector Pledge. This pledge can be taken by students to encourage them to treat Earth with kindness and respect.

Connection

This book reminded me of what is going on in our world currently. We have to fight for what we believe in and stand for it at all times. I recently attended the Black Lives Matter March in Boone, NC. This is the first time I have attended a march. It was so eye opening and gave me the perspective of other cultures and what problems they face. I had never felt so powerful that I (as an individual) could make such a difference. It takes many people to make a difference but it starts with one person. This reminded me of the rally the little girl organized to fight for clean water. If it wasn't for her, there would be no rally.
